COUNTRIES AND CONTINENTS
- The planet we live on is the Earth.
- The Earth is round.
- If youlook at the Earth from space, you will be able to see land, seas, oceans, continents and even countries.
- There are four oceans and six continents.
- The continents are:Eurasia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, North America and SouthAmerica.
- The continents are very large.
- Oceans and seas wash them and separate them from each other.
- There are usually many countries on each continent.
- There are more than 40 countries in Africa, but there is only one large country in Australia.
- It has got almost the same name as the continent.
- Let’s name some countries from each continent: the Russian Federation (Russia), the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy are in Europe; China, India, Vietnam are in Asia; Canada and the United States are in America; Egypt is an African country.
- The largest country in the world is the Russian Federation (Russia).
- The smallest country is the Vatican. People of different nationalities live in these countries. Theyspeak different languages.
- Each country has its national flag, anthem and its own traditions and customs.
MY FLAT
- The climate in the United Kingdom is generally mild because of the Gulf Stream and it is usually described as cool, humid and changeable.
- The weather is so changeable indeed that the English often say that they have no climate but only weather.
- The English also say that they have three kinds of weather: when it rains in the morning, when it rains in the afternoon or when it rains all day long.
- The weather is never too hot or too cold.
- Winters are very mild.
- Sometimes it snows and snow melts quickly and the English seldom have “white Christmas”.
- In fact in the South of England grass remains green all the year round.
- This humid mild climate is good for plants. The trees and flowers begin to blossom early in spring.
- Some of them have become symbols in the UK.
- You may know that poppy is the symbol of peace, the red rose is the national emblem of England, the thistle is the national emblem of Scotland.
- The daffodils and the leek are the emblems of Wales and the shamrock is the emblem of Ireland.
- Children in England attend secondary school between the ages of 11 and 16.
- They study a lot of different subjects like Maths, Science, Geography, and Art
- From the ages of 14 to 16 all pupils prepare for their GCSEs.
- Most schools in England have a school uniform.
- Children may have up to 8 lessons a day.
- They have a one-hour lunch break when they can catch up with their friends
- A lot of pupils do after- school activities.
- Some are members of their school's football or hockey team and compete with other schools.
- Other pupils are in the school choir or play an instrument in the school orchestra.
- They can also join different clubs such as the art, drama or computer club which give them the complete learning experience.
- Ancient Egyptians lived along the banks of the River Nile in northeast Africa.
- Pharaos ruled this great and powerful empire for more that 2500 years.
- The Ancient Egyptians lived in houses made of mud bricks, but they also built houses and gigantic piramids from stone.
- They worked as farmers and artists.
- They hunted animals and went fishing on the River Nile.
- They also had boats and transported food and other goods along the river.
- In their free time they played music (musical instruments) or board games.
- Only wealthy boys could attend school.
- They studied hyeroglyphics.
- Ancient Egypt had a great civilisation which many people still study and admire today.
